Boran's Notes
Easy crossing Skagerrak from Sweden to Denmark with a variety of impressions.
First a lot of ferry traffic out of Göteborg. Crossing itself was very easy.
When I passed Skagen I felt fresh enough to continue, and I knew that the harbour is more industrial than scenic. Actually I could hear its noise from a distance at sea.
After rounding the kap, the wind completely dropped. This gave me a good chance to sleep for a while with “anchor alarm” watching my slow drifting.
Approaching Hirtshals, quite useful wind set in, and I decided again to continue sailing towards Hanstholm. But soon the wind turned to Southwest, against my course. I had to tack (also fixed the loose stay) and I knew that Hanstholm is many hours away on a tacking course. So I decided to turn around and stop at Hirtshals instead. It has been a very good trip already.
Incidents
-
I noticed that one of the wind turbine’s dyneema stays came loose. I fixed it while heaving to in high waves.
-
While approaching Hirtshals harbour, I sailed an accidental gybe. The boom swang over, was forced down by its momentum and the main sheet, and hit my head quite hard. Until then I was under the wrong impression that the boom is high enough so that it would swing above my head when I am sitting on the bench (which I was).
Lessons learned
- check all stays regularly in pre-departure checks
- wear a helmet when sailing in rough conditions
