Boran's Notes

  1. Sunday

Leaving in an attempt to catch a rare weather window - this time a rather calm North-Easterly wind for exiting the Strait of Gibraltar.

Crossed Bay of Gibraltar to Punto del Carnero with the intention of staying close the the Northern coast, where ocean current West-to-East is slowest. Several squalls with rain and harder wind from random directions (South-East). Rainbclouds following from South-East.

Wind was slow close to the hilly coast, faster when we changed course to close to the TSC. Stayed on boundary of TSC until Tarifa. Not much more rain.

Crossed the Strait from Tarifa with course 200°. Large pod of dolpins playing with us while the boat was very slow (1 kn).

South of the TSC we changed course to Cap Spartel (250°) with engine support. Passed Tangier in darkness after dusk.

  2. Monday

Esteban helming all day in Bft 5 following wind. Esteban discovered how to approach waves smoothly.

Boran smelled burnt plastic from the charging cable of starboard engine, before smoke detector triggered. Easy replacement. Scary cause (loose connection?).

VHF conversation at night between Boran and Captain of Fishing Vessel, warning of upcoming “little storm”.

  3. Tuesday

    Tacking against SW wind.

    Reefing aft sail.

    Reefing mid sail.

Cooking broccoli with onions and tofu, on ramen with korma sauce.

Low pressure system from the North moves further South than previously in the forecast, gaining influence over the weather situation at our location.

Decision to go offshore in order to avoid high waves close to coast.

Far offshore we lost AIS reception and autohelm. Also the steering lines jammed behind the steering drum. We hove to (just aftsail up) and Boran could fix electronics by separating the telemtry electronics in starboard cabin from main circuit and adding a spare 12V battery. Together we fixed the steering by removing the wheel and sorting the line anew.

  4. Wednesday

Estebans seasickness getting worse. Tacking course, rainy day.

  5. Thursday

Decision to sail to Essaouira because of more hard wind for the coming days.

Calm wind on that day, sunny weather, easy sailing.

  6. Friday

Arriving to Essaouira, surfing the swell and pointing high into the wind. Entering the bay between rocks and island. Anchoring at first, then the lady on VHF invited us into the harbour because of upcoming swell.
